This video is for students who are preparing for their #SpeakingTest in year 10 of a German #Realschule, which is part of their final exams for the #MittlereReife. Part of this speaking test is a one-minute picture description. I’ve done a video already on how to describe pictures. It’s called 6 Tips on How to Describe Pictures (see link below). But today’s video is on how to describe symbolic pictures, which are pictures that symbolise something that’s going on in the world or our society. They usually carry a deeper meaning and a message. Here are my tips: 1. Start by stating the main element of the picture. 2. Describe special features of this focal element. 3. Move on to relevant elements in the background. 4. Talk about what the elements on the picture symbolise. Phrases: It symbolises… It represents… It means that … It stands for…. 5. Talk about thoughts, emotions and associations the image evoke in you. 6. Finish the description by stating the message of the picture. To practise, play the picture description three times. First, just listen carefully and connect the words your hear with the images you see. The second and third time, speak along aloud. This will help you activate the vocabulary you have learned over the years and to learn some new phrases and words. Last but not least, try yourself. Thanks for listening and good luck on your speaking test!
