Rumpelstiltskin: A Modern Retelling

Today it’s fairy tale day. When looking for a text on auditioning I found this beautiful modern adaptation of the Brother Grimm fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin on British Council Learning English for Teens. The text is level B 1 and I used it in my year 6 group (second year of English at a German Gymnasium). The worksheet I created to go with this text is about:
– Text comprehension & speaking: Comparing this modern version with the original story
– Grammar: Practising the comparative structures ‚more…than‘ and ’not as … as‘

This worksheet will surely fill at least a 45-minute lesson unit. To add a creative task you could give your students another fairy tale written in simple English and ask them to turn it into a modern fairy tale. You want to look for short texts such as you can find here: https://parenting.firstcry.com/…/10-popular-fairy-tale-sto…/ And maybe you want to give your students some ideas like Cinderella is a teenage girl who goes to a Halloween ball and loses her mobile phone, etc. Some students will be very creative right away, some will need a little help.

Right, I’ve got to go teaching now! Enjoy the worksheet and the upcoming weekend!
